For the
LOVE of Fashion
With Superette’s 15th birthday celebration this month, Victoria Tait speaks with part-owner and founder Rickie Dee about the inspiration for the store and what inspires her this season. What was the initial concept behind Superette?
At the age of 21, both James [Rigden] and I wanted to work for ourselves and do something we had a passion for. This was fashion, and that's where the idea of opening our very first store came from. We wanted Superette to be not just a store with racks down each side, but rather an experience and a space that would inspire our customers. Everything that we buy in the store must be something that we personally love and want ourselves.
What would you say has been your biggest highlight over the past 15 years? • • • •
Each of the five stores we have opened. Working with amazing people each and every day. The launch of our Superette in-house brand. The introduction of homewares to our store concepts four years ago. • Launching our online store in 2013.
What are the must-have items in store this season?
Too many to name… but my most recent purchases are: Senso Tyra heel, Camilla & Marc Sterling Blazer in khaki, Bassike French Seam T in white, Victoria & Woods Sterling Faux Fur Vest, Eat Beautiful book, Zimmermann Stranded Trouser.
How would you describe your own style?
I do have three kids, so I like to be comfortable, and I'm not super girlie. In saying that I will rough up a long maxi skirt with a leather biker jacket or a blazer with ripped denim jeans. I do like to dress up, and it is important in the business we are in.
What’s inspiring you right now?
I'm inspired every day by my team. Our office space, our designer’s collections, travel and, of course, magazines and blogs. I pick up inspiration from everything around me.

10 Fashion most iconic
pieces of all time
1.
From the little black dress to the Burberry trenchcoat, these iconic fashion items have stood the test of time. WORDS Victoria Tait
1. chanel 2.55 In 1955, Coco Chanel was to change fashion history with the introduction of the Chanel 2.55. Tired of carrying handbags and inspired by the bags used by soldiers, Coco Chanel added a long strap that enabled the practical 2.55 to be worn over the shoulder. It was an immediate success. In the first year, the Chanel fashion house had to refuse orders because of the high demand. This changing moment in fashion history made it acceptable for upperclass women to carry a bag on their shoulders.
2.
2. Dior Ballet skirt After WWII, fashion yearned for something more frivolous, colourful and playful. Christian Dior presented just that with the voluminous ballet skirt. The iconic shape he represented was called the ‘New Look’. Today the ballet or full skirt is still popular and is often combined with an edgy leather jacket.

3. Louboutins Christian Louboutin’s red soles were inspired by his assistant. The story goes that she was painting her nails in a bright-red colour, Louboutin took the nailpolish and began to paint the sole of the shoes. And so the bright red became the signature colour of Louboutin. The now-famous Louboutins are worn by many famous designers and celebrities.
3.
4. YsL smoking Jacket At the height of the feminist movement Yves Saint Laurent introduced the ‘Le Smoking’ – the first tuxedo for women. The 1966 design was a turning point, allowing women to be feminine and masculine all at once. It was the first time women could wear a smoking jacket to dinner and other events, too.
5. hermès Birkin In the ’80s, Jane Birkin was seated next to Jean-Louis Dumas, the CEO of Hermès, on her flight from Paris to London. Jane was complaining that she never found the perfect weekend bag. Shortly after their meet-up, Jane Birkin received her personalised bag with a note. From that moment on, the Birkin became the most-recognised luxury handbag in the world, now selling for anywhere between $10,000 and $200,000.
4. 5.
6. DvF Wrap Dress Launched in 1972, Diane von Fürstenberg’s classic jersey wrap dress became an instant classic. The designer explains the success of this cult classic item perfectly: “Clothes have to reflect women’s liberation. Women today want versatile, simple, classic, comfortable, slimming clothes. This is the story of my success.” This hermès Birkin bag was sold at a christie’s auction in hong Kong for a massive hKD$1.72 million (nZD$314,500).

7. The chanel suit
7.
Chanel’s most iconic item almost never was. In 1923, Coco Chanel invited journalists to preview her new collection – and the Chanel suit barely even got a mention in the press reviews. It wasn’t until after WWII, when Coco reintroduced the suit, that it became a huge success.
8. Burberry Trenchcoat Famously worn by British officers in WWI, the Burberry trenchcoat was designed to withstand harsh weather conditions. The D-shaped belt ring was used for attaching small items such as maps. Later the coat was modified and now is the brand’s most recognisable item.
9. calvin Klein slip Dress In the 1990s, Calvin Klein gave the little black dress a makeover... by turning it into a casual-looking nightie. Made famous by Kate Moss, the slip dress was in the style of a petticoat and traditionally cut on the bias, with thin straps. Today, the dress has made a big comeback in what’s known as ‘the pyjama trend’.
10. The Little Black Dress Before the 1920s, women used to wear black only while mourning. It was considered distasteful to wear it on any other occasion. One woman changed this view forever. Coco Chanel’s little black dress design graced the pages of Vogue in 1926, when the magazine published a sketch of the dress. Decades later, when Audrey Hepburn wore a Chanel dress in Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961), the fate of the cult item – as a true wardrobe essential – was sealed.

LESS
is more
With cosmetic procedures becoming more widely used, Victoria Tait speaks with Dr Philip Frost from Face Value about what’s currently on trend. What is the most fashionable treatment at the moment?
Trends do come and go in cosmetic medicine, however, the treatments I am most often called on to provide remain Botulinum Toxin (such as Botox® and Dysport®), and dermal fillers. Pleasingly, the glamorised, American, more “in your face” approach hasn’t taken on in New Zealand, where we aim for a far more natural look, with treatments tailored to the individual and focusing on replacing volume and definition in the face, which is often depleted as we age. My younger clients are favouring lip enhancement, yet still opting for a “less is more” approach.
Can you explain the procedures?
Each procedure is dictated by the age and individual needs of the client. It is a collaborative approach where I work with each client to address their specific concerns and work out a cost-effective plan. The aim is to achieve a natural, healthy look. This may involve injecting fillers, for example, into the cheeks to restore mid-face volume, or enhancing the lips to improve definition and volume where required. Botulinum treatments involve injecting small amounts to relax over-dynamic muscles, usually in the frown, forehead and crow’s feet area. This softens and, in time, corrects fixed deep lines.
What results will this achieve?
The aim is always to achieve a refreshed, healthy and natural look. A “good for your years” appearance. In addition to the injectable treatments we advise on skin care and provide other services that work on hydrating and rejuvenating the skin.
What’s a common myth surrounding cosmetic treatments?
There are two that spring to mind. Firstly, that “Botox is a poison”. In fact it is extraordinarily safe and used in many fields of medicine. The doses used in cosmetic treatments are tiny. The second is due to the American TV media’s poor portrayal of aesthetic medicine, constantly showing over treatments and “botched” disasters. Pleasingly, in this country, clients and practitioners alike seek a natural look and such poor outcomes are rare. www.facevalue.co.nz • 03 363 8810

SUCCESS STORY
Tracey Cox & Natalie Gibson Directors – All About You
How did your business partnership come about? Tracy: We met while Natalie was working as an Environ
educator, just after I had taken over ownership of All About You, mid-2016. We soon realised we both had strong holistic views around the beauty industry. We knew that beauty didn’t just come from quick fixes with machinery, and our passion was to offer clients a slow – but consistent – beauty approach, while still being able to offer cutting-edge technology and the latest scientific developments. All this in a beautiful, relaxing environment that deliver results.
What strengths do you each bring to the business? Tracy: Natalie is a holistic practitioner who has more
than 15 years’ experience in the skincare and wellness industry. She is a skin-health educator, has a passion for treating the course of skin conditions from the inside out, and she is currently training to become a naturopath. Natalie: Tracy is the driving force behind All About You. She likes to introduce new and innovative ways for women to be able to experience our treatments. She believes skin health should be available to all women. Tracy is committed to providing an amazing experience for all our clients plus she is a highly-skilled IPL technician. Together we are a team determined to offer our clients an experience of both holistic well-being with real results.
What is your most popular treatment and why? Our most popular treatments are our vitamin therapy facials, which can be customised to an individual’s skin concerns. They are the perfect balance between results-driven technology and relaxation. By utilising our membership programme, these facials become more affordable to have on a regular basis.
What is the No. 1 piece of skincare advice you would like to give New Zealand women? Invest in good skincare containing vitamins and antioxidants – you are worth the investment!
If you could only take three items on holiday, what would they be? 1. 2. 3. photography: Charlie Jackson
